Anti-suicide devices for hostels
Hostels, PGs and student residences have become the main place anti-suicide devices are fitted to ceiling fans in India. This guide covers why, what the Kota directive asked for, and how to fit devices across a whole building.
If a student in your care is struggling, don't wait. Tele-MANAS (14416) and the KIRAN helpline (1800-599-0019) are free and open 24/7, and can advise wardens and parents as well as students.
Why hostels are fitting anti-suicide devices
Students living away from home, often under intense exam pressure, can go through a crisis alone in their room. Coaching hubs and campuses have responded with counselling, helplines, mentoring and wellbeing programmes. Alongside these, many have fitted anti-suicide devices to ceiling fans. This follows the well-established principle that restricting access to means helps prevent suicide.
The Kota directive
In 2023, the district administration in Kota, Rajasthan, directed hostels and paying-guest accommodations in the city to fit spring-loaded anti-suicide devices to their ceiling fans, as part of a wider set of student wellbeing measures (VOA report). Today SafeClamp is fitted in 80% of hostels in Kota.
Requirements can change and vary between districts and institutions. Check the current guidance from your local administration or university before you plan an installation.
What matters in a hostel setting
- Retrofit onto existing fans. A building may have hundreds of fans. SafeClamp clamps onto the fans already installed, so none need to be replaced.
- An alarm that brings help. SafeClamp sounds a 120+ decibel alarm the moment it triggers, loud enough to alert neighbouring rooms and wardens.
- Room-level alerts. The optional electronic notification system can alert a warden or security desk over Wi-Fi or cellular, so staff know exactly where to go.
- Power cut-off. Electricity to the fan is cut when the device triggers.
- No change for residents. The fan works as it always did, which discourages tampering.
- Fan-drop protection. The same design protects against the fan itself falling, which is a safety benefit for every room.
Rolling it out across a building
- Count your fans by floor and room, including common rooms and staff quarters, and note any unusually high or low ceilings.
- Get a quote for the whole building. SafeClamp starts from ₹350 per fan; contact us for bulk and institutional pricing.
- Install with a qualified electrician. SafeClamp is designed for quick retrofitting without major changes to the fan or ceiling.
- Decide who responds. Agree who hears the alarm or receives the alert at each hour of the day, and what they do next.
- Pair it with care. Make sure every resident knows where to get help: counsellors, helplines and a trusted person on staff.
